Coffee Sack Chair Cushions……{& The Perils of Being a Ballerina}

OK, so I’m trying to be a good sport. I re-injured a past dance injury back in June while I was in Atlanta at Haven. I just knew that I could do all my little tricks…..after dancing professionally for almost 30 years my bag of tricks for feet injuries is quite large. ha!

But, alas. It has just kept getting worse, landing me at the foot doctor this week getting x-rays, etc. I now have a lovely little device on the side of my foot that is supposed to re-teach my foot how to walk. Leave it to me to have a foot that forgets how to walk. My foot is taped like a mummy. Try not to be envious…..I’m thinking that maybe I could start a new fashion trend. I’ll put it on Pinterest and see what happens. Hey, I could paint it with chalk paint!

One of the teen girls that spent the night here a few days ago wants to be a professional ballerina. She asked about my foot, and when I explained my original injury and what was wrong currently…she asked “Does that happen often?” From the look on my face I think she may have instantly changed career paths.

Hey, maybe I could look at this war wound that comes back to haunt me as a steeped memory! It reminds me of my years as a ballerina…..ones that I loved and regardless of injuries incurred would do all over again. It led me to meet Handsome. Could this possibly be a steeped memory???? Hmmmmmmm. I’ll work on it.

Oh, did I mention that while this thing is on my foot I can’t take a shower? Yeah. That’s a whole different kind of steeping that I’m thinking is not going to be good.  Bless. my. heart.

So, while I’m here stinking steeping…..I brought back a little project from the archives that I thought would be fun.

Coffee Sack Chair Cushions

We have this great dining set that we keep on our front porch–we have a wonderful, huge front porch–LOVE IT!!  It was actually my parents dining set in the 70′s.  These cushions have seen many covers–and are still going strong.  They desperately needed a new look this year–and so I started my search.  Did I want to cover them in linen again?  Vintage tablecloth?  Oh no—NOT the plastic/vinyl-ly stuff.  Definitely not!

Our whole family loves coffee–especially coffee on the porch.  And, I love old coffee sacks.  Ebay is a great place to find coffee sacks.  I purchased 20 old sacks for $25–we’ve done all kinds of fun things with them.  They would be perfect for this project!  What do you think?

These are very easy seats to cover because the cushions actually sit on top of the frame.  Make sure if you cover similar cushions you have a great staple gun. {I wasn’t very neat with my stapling–I can get away with that for these cushions, but for some you wouldn’t be able to.}

Turn seats upside down on top of fabric and cut a piece that is at least 3-4 inches larger than your cushion.  When stapling–start on one side in the middle and then go to the opposite side pulling taught as you staple.

It took me less than 30 minutes for these cushions! Now—how to get those rusty spots off the glass……….???????? I’ll try the Magic Eraser!

Unique Gardens {Fun Discoveries}

If you saw the movie “Julie and Julia” do you remember the scene where Julie is in the kitchen trying to make dinner and has a complete breakdown…crying, laying on the floor in a fit of desperation, waving the white dish towel? Yeah. Well, that has been me today. It’s been one of those days.  So when I came across these fun pictures…they made me smile and giggle. Martha would say “It’s a good thing”.

Gardening is one of my favorite hobbies….and whenever I go somewhere I love to check out the gardens in the area. Strolling through a garden is such soul ministry to me.

I had fun finding these unique gardens over the past few weeks….some of them make me laugh and giggle; and others make we want to run out and get the supplies to duplicate them in our yard!

We love to make fairy gardens. We usually make ours outside and use only all natural ingredients that we find in the garden and yard. {Supposedly a true fairy garden only has things from nature in them…..}  This one would be fun on a table on the porch or inside.

A garden planted in a pallet…..great way to make use of vertical space. This would be perfect for apartment balconies or porches; or any other small area.

This is the one that I cannot stop giggling at….no matter how many times I look at it. This is just hilarious….but to add to it, check out the faces of the people inside! Cracks. Me. Up.  I laugh every time….I’m laughing now.

Soda Can Art

I think these are so fun to make…I love taking things and repurposing them into something completely different from their original purpose.

These fun garden art pieces are made from aluminum soda cans.

soda can artIt’s a super easy project…great fun for even young children. {An adult probably needs to do the cutting and then they can decorate.}

Here’s what you need:

aluminum soda cans…any kind

acrylic paints and/or spray paints

3-D or puff paint if you want a 3-D look

sharp scissors

Here’s how ya do it:

1. Thoroughly wash/rinse out cans

2. Using sharp scissors cut the can in half…poke a hole halfway down and then cut around the can.

3. Decide the design you would like…..pointed or squared. Then begin from the cut edge cut down until you ALMOST reach the bottom…either in zig-zag or in long rectangles.

4.  Bend the cut pieces out like rays of a sunshine.  If there are any pieces you don’t like…cut them out.

5.  Paint and decorate them any way you wish!

Aluminum is super easy to bend, so you can crinkle it if you’d like; or bend it any way you wish.  You can really have fun with this project.

Teens would love to do a bunch of these to decorate their room or locker…just be careful, the cut edges are sharp.

You can hang them with nails, or put magnets on the back.

Anyone else gearing up for school?  I started filling in planners/plans for our three today. {We homeschool…so I’m making sure we have everything covered and ordered and ready to go.} So hard to believe that we will be starting in just a couple of weeks!

It will be an exciting year…our oldest will be going to China for a couple of weeks….and I will also be taking him to NYC for a Mom/Son senior trip. Lots of other exciting things coming up this school year, too.  I don’t want to rush it away….but I can’t wait for some things!

I’m running around trying to squeeze in those last few projects before we start…my ideas far exceed my allotted time! Eeeeeeeeeek!

Industrial Pipe Towel Bar {Oil Rubbed Bronze}

I often go to Lowe’s and hang out in the metal pipe section. {Just one more interesting fact about me that you might want to know.}

The guys there used to give me strange looks and keep asking could they help me….but now they just smile and keep going. It confuses them what I’m doing there…gathering metal pipe pieces and making strange things right there in the aisles. But, they are used to me now. I always know when there is a new employee…because I get the weird look and constant query to help me.

For our new master bathroom I wanted to get the hand towel off of the counter, and I needed a fun, new way to make it accessible to use, but out of the way.

To the Lowe’s metal pipe aisle I went.

Using a few pieces I put together a fun, industrial towel bar and then painted it oil rubbed bronze.  I’m loving it!

We attached it right beside the sink and now the towel is out of the way, doesn’t have to be constantly refolded and adds a neat element to the new bath.

{Excuse some of the hazy pics….I took them outside on a day that was so hot and humid my lens kept fogging up! ha!}

Here’s what you need:

Metal pipe pieces….we used 3/8″

2 discs {make sure they are the same size as your other pieces}

2 male 90 degree joints {make sure they are the same size as your other pieces}

1 pipe in the length that you need for your bar {we used 3/8″ pipe in 6″ length}

Here’s how ya do it:

1.  Screw all  pieces together….the 90 degree pieces to each end of your pipe, and then screw the discs onto each side. Super easy!

2.  Leave as is or paint in your choice of finish. {If you leave it as is I would suggest sealing it with a clear acrylic, they can sometimes be a bit greasy.}

Voila!

Outside Chalkboard Tables {DIY Chalkboard}

We have had these little table frames in our shed for years!  It was time to do something with them.  I think we found them on the side of the road, or someone was cleaning them out and gave them to us….I can’t remember which.

Handsome cut some old wood we also had in the shed into squares to fit inside the table tops……and I painted them with chalkboard paint {some people call it blackboard paint}.  Now these little tables are having fun in our yard serving all kinds of purposes…fun notes, game tables, score keepers, impromptu drawings, etc.

[OK, these pictures are humbling....because I have to admit: I DON'T LIKE PLASTIC! OK, I said it.  Hate me if you want to....I know some people love it.  We had a yard full of wonderful teak yard furniture...but the squirrels decided to use it as a chew toy.  So, until we find metal furniture that we really like.....we have to go with the plastic chairs.] *hanging head with large sigh*

If you’d like to make some fun chalkboard tables like these…..

Here  is what you need:

Chalkboard paint {I used the spray kind purchased from AC Moore or Michael’s}

table frame of some kind..if it’s for outside metal would be best

plywood 3/8″ or 1/2″ thick {We used 3/8″}

Here’s how ya do it:

If you don’t like the frame color/finish….paint it.  We left ours as is because we liked the rusty look

Cut the plywood to fit inside the frame of the table..be sure to cut it just a tad bit smaller than the size of the frame.  If your table doesn’t have a ‘pocket’ for the wood to fit into…then you can cut the wood to whatever size you would like and attach it to the table with screws.

Paint the wood with the chalkboard paint…..I used 3 coats.  It dries very quickly.

Attach your top to the base by either inserting into the opening or with screws..depending on the style of table that you have.

Fern in a Jar……

I knew I was missing a glass.  I looked everywhere for it.

Hmmmmmm……

And then when I went into my youngest daughter’s room…there it was!

I love what she did with it!  She planted a small fern in one of our vintage drinking glasses.

I love how you can see the soil and the roots.

Some of our other drinking glasses might be disappearing…..and it will be me this time! :)

The Nook……

After creating a neat little garden room that we aptly named “The Nook”, we realized that to really be a ‘nook’ it needed more privacy. {It sat right beside the property line.}  A few years earlier when visiting some friends I noticed a huge stack of shutters by the road—they were renovating the outside of their home and throwing out the old shutters.   EEEEEEKKKKKK!   Throwing out!!????  I immediately loaded them into the car and hauled them home—not knowing at the time what I’d do with them; but I knew it would be fun!

So, here we are needing Nook privacy–and a shed full of wooden shutters.  Handsome went out and purchased four 4 x 4 posts, hinged the shutters together; and after cementing the posts in the ground nailed our hinged shutter fence to them!  We are not sure why our friends had two different colors of shutters on the outside of their house??  White for some, gray for the others…….. BUT, didn’t matter to us, because we painted them a wonderful French blue.  {We painted the other side a bark color to blend in with the trees—since this was the side facing our neighbors.  We weren’t sure they would be as excited about the French blue as we were.  In fact, we know that they wouldn’t be.}

So, if you come across (or already have!) some old wooden shutters—have fun making a little nook for yourself!

Here’s what you need to make a fence out of old shutters:

*  as many shutters as you would like the fence long–we have 10-6 feet high shutters

*  4 x 4 posts (that are 2 feet taller than your shutters)—about 1 every 3-4 shutters (depending on the width of your shutters)

*  2 sets of hinges for each set of shutters

*  nails/screw to attach shutters to posts

*  cement for posts

Here’s how ya do it:

1.  Paint the back side of the shutters—once installed you will not be able to get to this side! (Be aware of any neighbors that may not be as excited about your nook as you are–so, be considerate in your color choices for their side. )

2.  Measure off how many feet apart you will need a post, dig a hole that is 2′ deep, put post in, fill with cement.  When dry, cover with dirt.

3.  Attach shutters together with hinges—make sure the ‘hinge’ is on the back side, spread out flat

4.  Once cement has dried—usually 24 hours—attach shutter sections to posts using nails or screws. (Screws are a bit more sturdy for this project, but nails will work just fine.)

5.  Paint your side of the fence!  {When we painted ours–we didn’t make it opaque, we wanted a weathered look.  That is hard to see in the pictures—if that is the look you are looking for it will only take one coat.)

6.  Cozy up your Nook with furniture, plants, walkways, etc.

7.  Sit and listen to birdsong while sipping your coffee!

Special Memento Containers….

I dearly love Starbucks bottled Frappuccinos!

I found a way to justify my consumption!

These glass bottles have clear labels that come off super easy, and then if you wash them in the dishwasher any residue that is left will come off during the wash. They look very much like vintage milk bottles….love this look.

We use them as drinking bottles…they look great with paper straws in them, vases…have fun tying burlap or twine around the neck to dress them up a bit…… we also use them for our collection of sand from the different beaches that we have visited.

You can leave the lids as they are…or spray paint them any color you wish. For my son’s sand collection we spray the lids silver…for the collection above we just left the lids as they are because we store them on a high shelf. We then tie a tag with the beach’s name on it around the neck.

It’s neat to collect sand from different beaches and see the vast differences in each one. Some are dark, some are light, some are fine, some are course….if you have never been to the website that shows the magnification of sand…..by all means, please visit it here.  It is amazing and so beautiful! We are walking on these lovely treasures!

So, find some Frappuccino on sale…..have a Frappuccino Party {or drink them all yourself, like me}……and have some fun with the neat empty bottles!

Garden Tool Trellises…..

I shared this post back in the beginning of this blog…..

and since this week I’ve been in a gardening state of mind

I thought I would pull it back up from the depths and share it again,

since we have so many wonderful, new friends that may have missed it.

I love to take something that was meant for one thing and use it a totally different way.  How about you?  At our home and yard the unusual is usual.

When my grandfather died I received many of his gardening tools, plow, wheelbarrows, etc.  I use them to this day.  But some of them have worn out, broken, or in some way become unable to be used as tools.  We have found all kinds of ways to continue to use them in our garden.  This would be a fun project with any tools—but it makes them extra special that they were my grandfather’s.

When the garden rake and shovel began to crack and break we glued them where needed and turned them into trellises in one of the rose beds.

The mandevilla is super happy on the shovel these days.

And the rake is awaiting the moonflower vine that my daughter grew in her ‘greenhouse’.  We are gong to plant it today!

Here’s what you need to make your own tool trellis:

~ long-handled garden tools {the older the better—go yard saling or flea marketing if you don’t already have some!}

~ PVC pipe that fits the handle of your chosen tool

~ small, crushed stone/rocks

~ wonderful vines to plant at the base {my favorite part!}

How ya do it:

1. Cut an 18″ section of PVC pipe for each tool you will be using

2.  Insert the pipe into the ground where you want your trellis

3.  Fill the bottom of the pipe with about 4-6″ of crushed stones/rocks

4.  Insert your tool into the pipe

5.  Plant your wonderful vine!

Why the PVC???  Well, we live in the humid US south—termites outnumber people.  They love it here—so anytime you even THINK of putting wood close to the ground–you have to have protection!  The PVC and crushed stone will keep your tool from coming into contact with the soil and rotting; which also  protects against wood-eating critters.

Another fun option:  if it fits the look of your garden—–you could use old or new tools and paint them!  Fun, bright colors!  Just add that step before you plant them and be sure to use exterior spray paint.  That would be a really fun accent in a garden.  {Just make sure you paint it a different color than the flower that you will be growing on it.  We are in the process of making a gate out of old tools—and we are thinking of painting it when we are done.  I’ll let you know how it goes.

Drop Cloth Numbered Napkins…

I love painter’s drop cloth.

You can do so many wonderful things with it!

It can be used to cover furniture, for curtains, etc.

It is so soft and durable….and has the look of

wonderful European grain sack fabric.

I used it just lately to make napkins and

a few dish towels…….

all out of one drop cloth.

The drop cloth cost around $15 and I made

12 large 22″ napkins and 3 dish towels.

I had thought about adding these fun items to

the shop….but all of my life sewing has had

this awful effect on me.

It makes me curse.

I can sew….quite well, actually.

When my children were babies I made them

French hand sewn cloths that I also smocked.

When I was a teen I taught French hand sewing classes.

When I was little I made all of my Barbie’s clothes.

All of the curtains, etc. in our home….yep, I made ‘em.

If the end of the world is near and my family needed

clothes….I could make them.

The problem:

I DON’T LIKE TO SEW!

Just because you can do something…

and are even good at it, doesn’t mean it’s your calling.

HA!

Strangest thing…..I’m not sure why sewing has this

cursing effect on me. I always waited until

my little ones were in bed before I would

sew things….just in case. hahaha

And, I bite my tongue a lot.

So, I sew for our home and when I have fun ideas….

but the thought of sewing, like, hundreds of these…..

Ugh. Would. push. me. over. the. edge.

So, I’m going to tell you guys how you can do your own!

It’s super easy…no cursing necessary. :)

After making the napkins and towels I used

transfer paper to print numbers on them.

You could print anything that you’d like to.

For our flour sack dish towels in the shop

I use a special art technique…not transfer paper,

but for this project; I used the transfer paper.

Here’s what you need:

1 large drop cloth {can be purchased from any home improvement store}

laser transfer paper {I like to use laser transfer paper on my inkjet printer…it gives it the vintage/worn look; and it doesn’t leave that ugly filmy look behind} I purchase mine from Amazon.

Here’s how ya do it:

1. Create your numbers or choose your design on your computer

2. Print it out on the laser transfer paper…make sure to print out a mirror image {the laser transfer paper will tell you to not use it on inkjet printers…..just ignore it. I’ve never been really good at following directions, anyway.}

3. Cut the drop cloth in 12-22″ squares…but instead of cutting the fabric…tear it. Make a small cut and then tear from there. Drop cloth fabric does much better with ripping than cutting. You will get a straighter edge.

4. Use the few odd-sized pieces for dish towels.

5. Hem all four sides of each 22″ square and the odd-sized pieces. Be sure to fold over the edge twice….double-hem. This will make a nicer, more finished edge; and will guard against fraying…for at least 20-30 years. ;)

6. Cut out your design that you have printed on your laser transfer paper.

7. NOW, you can follow the directions….I know there are some of you out there that really need to follow directions. Here’s your chance! Embrace it! Follow the directions on the transfer paper for heat setting your designs with an iron onto your newly made napkins and towels. Voila! You’ve done it! Aren’t they wonderful?
