Kentucky Derby

The Run for the Roses…The Kentucky Derby!

It’s amazing the celebrations and planning that go into an event that is less than 5 minutes!  If you go to the restroom….you’ll miss it! The running of the 139th Kentucky Derby is coming up this weekend…..and here in the U.S. it is highly celebrated all week.

Growing up there was a family here in our town that hailed from Kentucky and grew up in the box seats each year with their family.  Each year they would host a huge Derby Party on Derby Day on the lawn of their antebellum estate.  Everyone looked forward to it.  Due to sickness, the past few years there has been no Derby Party….and there always seems to be a bit of a void on that day.

Much of Handsome’s family lives in Kentucky…..and we have enjoyed spending time at the Kentucky Horse Park and the Kentucky Derby Museum over the years.  When Handsome returned from there this past January he brought be back a pair of horseshoes that had been used by one of the racehorses in last year’s Kentucky Derby….they still have track dirt in them.  This weekend they will grace our table as part of the centerpiece. =)

We grow Kentucky mint in our garden…..we brought it back from Kentucky years ago. Even though we won’t use it for mint juleps….we do have fun putting it in our iced tea.

If I was attending the derby this year……this would be outfit…….

If you’re headed to the actual derby here’s some hints as to where you might want to be….

Kentucky Derby Traditions: The Infield, just across the track from the clubhouse, but worlds away in social strata, you’ll find the infamous Infield scene. There are several distinct experiences found herein. The third turn, so named for its relationship to the race track, is home to a raucous crowd of singles and young-at-heart party goers. If that’s not your scene, head to the grassy first turn where family and picnic types go for a modicum of Southern mores and etiquette.

Whether at home or at the derby…you will definitely want to make Derby Pie…..featured yesterday in the New York Times. {Click the link below for the recipe.}

Teen Girl’s Room Redo {Sneak Peek}

Quick Note….only two more days to enter the big Blogoversary Giveaway……be sure to head over to this post and enter!

We have a few ‘rites of passage’ for our family….and one of them is that you get to totally redo your room when you turn 13. Our youngest has been designing her new room for 2 years now…and the day has finally arrived! Over the past few weeks we have patched, painted, created, ordered, fluffed, shopped, and slowly, but surely we have checked off everything on her list.

This morning…possibly as you read this…the Pottery Barn truck is sitting in our driveway delivering her dream bed. She is about to come out of her skin! =)

When we began painting a few weeks ago I had never seen so many holes in a wall. Whoa. I think the spackling is holding the wall up now. Her room ‘before’ was painted a sage green and when she was little was a garden room. We painted clotheslines on the wall that held her artwork and fun creations; birdhouses with cats underneath, etc. It was the perfect little girl’s room for her.

There is an extra ‘space’ in her room that originally was a walk-in attic/storage area; but we finished it and made it an extension of her room.

She is moving on……and has gone in a fun, totally different direction. The walls are now painted a Caribbean Blue Water {Benjamin Moore}, her extra space is floored in a dark walnut wood floor {it was black and white checks}, and her extra space/room is painted a lovely Gleeful {Sherwin Williams}.

Here’s a quick peek at the in-process redo. All painting is now done…a furrilicious couch sits in her sitting room beside her fridge, and the fun loft vanity bed is being delivered and set up this morning. She did all of her school work in advance for today because she can’t wait to get her room all set up and decorated.

She’s done a wonderful job…and I can’t wait to show you guys the finished project!

May Day Basket

May Day Baskets…..

May Day is right around the corner….and we have always enjoyed making May Day Baskets / Posies / Bouquets and leaving them as a surprise for people.

The original way to leave a May Day basket is to hang it on someone’s door, ring the doorbell or knock, and then run away. But, we like to do it a little differently. May Day is always May 1st….so, late at night on April 30th we go around and deliver our May Day Baskets. We hang them on people’s doors….so they will be there when they wake up and greet them first thing in the morning.

May Day Basket

Handsome & I did this even before we had kids….and we have used all kinds of containers, flowers, etc.  This year we are using the little mini Ben & Jerry’s ice cream containers and filling them with fun, spring flowers.

In the past we’ve used:  paper cones, small glass vases, jars, small clay pots…..whatever you use it’s important that you either have twine, ribbon, wire, etc. around it so you can hang it on the doorknob/fencepost……

May Day Basket

We’ve put together little flower bouquets, planted moonflower or morning glory seeds and left the little seedlings….any fun plant/flower works great.

May Day Basket

We always have a fun adventure leaving May Day Baskets/Bouquets…..we set off motion lights, we’ve been chased by dogs, and had to hide in bushes because people heard a clink on the door and started looking out the windows. So far we haven’t been arrested. Or shot. Whew!

Have you ever left May Day Baskets?

Happy Spring~

Waiting on The Conductor…..

If you follow me on Instagram…you got to see some of the fun pics from one of our violin concerts this weekend.  Some of these pics aren’t that great..I took them with my phone.  I have learned so much from watching our children perform over the years.  God has taught me so much as an artist and performer….and now He is also teaching me as I watch my children perform………..

+++++++++++

This past weekend was spent in concerts.

It was a pleasure.

All three of our children are violinists.

We have two that play in a pre-professional orchestra…and one that prefers to play,

but not perform.

It is such a joy to watch your children flourish in different areas as they grow up.

To be affirmed in their hard work and talents….

On Saturday their concerts were here locally…

but on Sunday they performed out of town in a historic train station that has been turned into

a performing venue….so cool!

Afterward there was a reception in the depot to celebrate a weekend of hard work.

Aren’t these floors awesome??!!  They remind me of our floors throughout our home..which were taken out of a 200 year-old Civil War home here in the South US.

Relaxing before the concert starts…

Entering in…….

Waiting for the conductor’s baton…..

Pouring out lovely music……

As I watched these performances this weekend…..I was reminded of life.

We have seasons of relaxing….gaining strength for what lies ahead….soaking in.

But then we get the call…the nudge…the leading…and must enter in to what it is we know we need to do.

We need to find our assigned seat and make sure our music is ready.

A new season.

But even after taking our seat, we need to wait for the Conductor’s baton….just the right timing…because the Conductor knows.

Another season.

Then comes the doing, the pouring out….we’ve been given all we need to do it….and we have the Conductor’s baton guiding us through the whole time if we keep our eyes on it.

Another season.

I was reminded of a problem I have.

In life I don’t always wait for the Conductor’s baton.

Sometimes it takes too long….and I wonder if He forgot about the concert.

But He didn’t.

The Conductor’s timing is always impeccable and always to be relied upon.

He knows things, like…when there’s a musician whose instrument isn’t quite in tune and ready to play.

Wait.

Or when there’s a musician that is on the wrong page of music.

Wait.

Or when the audience is ready to receive the gift about to be given to them.

Wait.

Yep, the Conductor knows things that the musicians don’t.

Waiting for the baton~

Christmas Journaling Day…..

I shared last year in this post how we have a family tradition…..A Christmas Journal.

art journaling

Each year we take turns writing an entry in the journal….whatever each of would like to share about the Christmas season that we just had. When the kids were little they would just scribble or draw pictures. It’s fun to go back and look over everyone’s entries.

That’s what we will be doing today….

Do you have any kind of family journal that everyone takes part in?

Blessings~

I wish you all a wonderful Christmas filled with friends, family, heartfelt peace amidst the world’s craziness…..and much delight! I think delight is often left out of many people’s lives today….and I want you to have it to the full this Christmas.

Christmas Eve has such a wonderful energy…you can feel it. Something exciting is in the air……Santa’s coming!

But even more exciting than that…..a Savior came, and He loves you so very much.

Some of our Christmas Eve traditions:

Baking Jesus’ birthday cake

waiting for Nanna & Poppa to arrive!

having a fun lunch with them

heading over to the annual Christmas Eve party….one I have been attending since I was young…and now our 3 play the violin each Christmas Eve there.

Celebrating Christmas with my side of the family…opening gifts and enjoying being together.

Leaving the trees lit all night and special treats out for Santa. {Still!}

There are so many more special things that we do each Christmas Eve….what about you? How do you celebrate on Christmas Eve? Is it quiet and relaxing? Hustle  & bustle?

For Buddy, the Elf, smiling is his favorite. Whatever your favorite is….I hope you get to do a lot of it today!

Much Love and Merry Christmas~

Olde World Christmas Ornaments……

I’m really not in to ‘theme trees’….. so, it’s kind of funny that I have one. I’m consistent in life like that. This particular tree started by accident. About 16 years ago a friend gave me an Olde World Ornament as a gift…also a housewarming; and that started it all. We now have well over 200 Olde World ornaments….and most of them were gifts from people that have seen that we collect them. They each have a special meaning and stand for something…an event, a special trip, a favorite place, hobby, etc.

After a few years we had so many of them that we needed to dedicate a tree to just the Olde World ornaments.

What are Olde World ornaments, you say? They are glass..usually mercury glass ornaments that are made the old world way. They are mouth blown into antique molds and then liquid silver is poured inside of them. They are then painted and glittered on the outside. I just love them.

DIY Victorian Christmas Crackers……

As long as I can remember we have had Christmas crackers at each place on Christmas Day. You can find them at many stores…but we have always made ours. When you create your own you can put inside exactly what you want to!

diy victorian christmas crackers

Each year we have special ornaments for each family…and label them with the last name and the year, then put them inside the crackers. We have Christmas with my side of the family on Christmas Eve at my parents’ home; and then we have a big Christmas Dinner here at our house on Christmas Day for Handsome’s family.

Want to make your own?

You will need:

fun little things to put inside {fun thins are ornaments, candy, paper crowns, small pens and pencils, fun words or wishes, etc.}

Tie each end with ribbon or string and then trim the ends to the length that you wish them to be. Be sure to tie the ribbon or string tightly…close to the tube.

Put them at each person’s plate for a special dinner! We always include tissue paper crowns in ours…and everyone has to wear them throughout the meal.

Christmas Crackers are something that everyone looks forward to each year…they have become part of our Christmas Dinner and Christmas Eve traditions with both sides of our family.

Do you have any special traditions that you started in your family?
