How to Enjoy the Summer Outdoors

We pretty much LIVE outside. Whether it’s parties, cookouts, hiking, taking walks, playing soccer, celebrating, concerts in the park, gardening, or just enjoying our favorite room of our home….the porch! But, we live in the South. As in THE South, USA. Summers are hot, extremely humid, and no matter how proactive you are at emptying standing water…mosquitos far outnumber people.

Porch Time

That makes a lot of people not even want to go outside here in Eastern NC once the humidity sets in and mosquitos start to party. But we have an incredible outdoor window of opportunity…..the temps and weather allow us to enjoy the outside at least 5-6 months out of the year! That’s a lot of fun time outside lost if you’re just trying to avoid the ‘Funsuckers’! Here’s a fun little video of how we enjoy the outside all summer…….CLICK HERE

This is one of my all-time favorite cartoons about mosquitos:

Just this past weekend we had some friends over and we spent a few hours just sitting on the front porch visiting…..and they were surprised that we didn’t have to deal with mosquitos!  We have a lot of people ask how we enjoy being outside so much and don’t have to bother with the bugs……..

We use Cutter® Insect Repellents because they are not greasy, work well, and are family friendly. I’m all for natural remedies…..but, here where we live, I think the mosquitos just laugh at them! Try them for yourself…..head on over to their Facebook page and be a part of their ‘like to win’ promotions that happen weekly/bi-weekly in the news feed! Super easy to enter!

Here are some fun tips that we have practiced for years that greatly add to us being able to enjoy the great outdoors and outsmart the bugs:

~ We always start the season off with using Cutter® Backyard Bug Control in May, July, and September. It’s been a staple in our arsenal. We spray our entire yard with it.

~ On our front porch, side porch, patio, and back yard seating areas we stock pots and baskets with Cutter® Skinsations or All Family Insect Repellents. I can spray the porch swing cushions and pillows and not even have to spray it on me…if I’m just staying in that spot.

~ We stock the car with Cutter® All Family Insect Wipes and the sprays….so when we go hiking or to an outdoor concert we are all set. The wipes are wonderful to throw in a bag on the go.

~ We empty and refill birdbaths every few days, and we make sure there is no standing water left in the fire pit or any other containers in the yard after a rain.

~ We stack empty pots on the potting bench upside down, so they won’t fill with water.

Do you deal with mosquitos trying to ruin your fun? How do you deal with it? Have you ever tried any of the Cutter® products?

I will try that product! I live down in Hope Mills, NC and my backyard has a pond , so you can imagine the bugs are feirce . I Have to water my flowers in the morning, because they eat me up in the evening. We love the porch at our house too, but of coarse the insects love me a little to much . I love reading your blog, its a great read, and your pics of your home our amazing.

I’m embarrassed to say we stay in house. When we camped we’d always have a fire, no matter how hot it was, lol. It stays hot here at night in July and August. I’m going to have to get some of that Cutter stuff, seems like you trust it. Have to be careful here due to that terrible sickness people get from mosquitos, (having a senior moment, can’t think of name of it blast it). They’re bad here too. Do you find it really helps spraying the yard? If so we’ve got to get some of that stuff, How could it hurt? Worth the price.
Wish the chickens could eat the mosquitos. but they’re in their little enclosure. Can’t let them run around out in yard, we’d never catch them. They seem quite content in their little yard and coop. Made a nice shade for them and used shade cloth over the lattice. At some point we’ll let them out in other part of fenced in enclosure. The person before us had her Dogin it so was quite handy when we got the chickens Sunday, 5 of them. I’ve never had chickens so it’s a learning experience. Have a great July 4th.
