I will paint anything that will be still long enough. Once we started having children Handsome made sure to keep them moving–scared they may be painted. I have painted refrigerators, tubs, tile, counters, furniture—you name it!
Spray paint has come a long way. You can now find fabulous paint that is opaque, covers well with one coat, just for metal, just for plastic…..the choices are endless. Oh, and the colors!
When re-doing our home office I did a quick metal file cabinet makeover with spray paint and a few swipes with a brush. Metal is so easy to paint. This is a great project for new or old file cabinets—the possibilities are endless. I went for a faux plaid—very faux–for our cabinets. Our cabinets are actually two cabinets stacked on top of each other—because initially we had been using them in two different places. We brought them together and stacked them–saved lots of space! Looks great tucked into its little corner by the curtained closet–don’t ya think?
Here’s how to do it:
tape up the handles of your cabinet–unless you want them the same color as your cabinet
spray cabinets the desired color–mine were sprayed white. Any spray paint will work–but try to grab the paint designed for metal, it will give you a really smooth finish
with the desired colors and a brush—paint on your design, whether it be stripes, polka dots, etc. For our file cabinet I used two colors–painting stripes vertically with one color, and horizontally with the other.
Voila! A fresh, new file cabinet to spruce up your home office!
How easy is that!
You can check out the room that this project came from here!
Have fun spraying~

I do not believe I have seen a plaid file cabinet.
Cabinets are another thing that tend to “collect” here. They are so useful and although you can not see it on the surface, I love organization. Of course none of my cabinets match. (color, size, shape) You may have given me a new way to make them fit together.
Have fun–if you have to file–you might as well make it look good!
I love plaid anything. This is right up my alley and I too have painted just about anything. It is an inexpensive, easy way to update and make something new.
Really pretty! I love that you did stripes instead of just one plain color. Fun!
I love this! I just hate how file cabinets are so blah…!! I’ll be creating a workspace soon and this is a great idea! Thanks for sharing! Have a great week!
Have fun creating your new space!
I will be refinishing some file cabinets in a few weeks. Thanks for the painting tips. They will surely come in handy!
It is such a quick and easy project–but creates a powerful punch!
love the dressed up look awesome
Such a great way to dress it up! A really great makeover to keep office stuff from being stuffy!
I’m visiting from Ladybug Blessings!
So happy to see this at Today’s Creative Blog! There are 15 or more unused filing cabinets at my husband’s business and I have been wanting to paint some. Also some metal shelving. This is such great inspiration and a wonderful job as well!
OOOOOOO–you could really have fun with that many filing cabinets!
Love how bright and cheery this is. Well done!
Thanks, Katie!
I’m loving all the file cabinet make overs I’ve been seeing. File cabinets need lots of dressing up to make them special. I like yours.
